About Us

What is TAUNY?

TAUNY is the only organization in New York’s North Country dedicated to showcasing the folk culture and living traditions of the region.

What does TAUNY do?

TAUNY collects, preserves, interprets, and presents the customs and traditions of the North Country. With archives, exhibits, and programs in Canton and throughout the region, TAUNY celebrates the diversity of living traditions inherited from the past, maintained in the present, and passed on to the future.

What is the North Country?

Our North Country is the 14-county region north of the Mohawk River, from Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River to Lake Champlain, including the Adirondack Mountains.

The next exhibition at The TAUNY Center will feature over 120 items from the folk art collection of the Folklife Center at the Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls, NY. Folk Arts All Around Us will open at The TAUNY Center on February 13. Curated by Folklife Center Director Todd DeGarmo, who has had primary vision and responsibility for building the collection during his long tenure at the Center, the exhibition is a colorful and varied display that demonstrates DeGarmo’s eclectic approach to collecting.

TAUNY's Open Call for Personal Collections

Do you or does someone you know have a collection related to folk art and/or traditional life in the North Country? We’d like to hear about it! In 2021, we’ll showcase collections from around our region in a revival of our popular Personal Collections Series. Contact TAUNY Executive Director Jill Breit, jill@tauny.org, 315-386-4289.

“Folk to Table” Project

You know we at TAUNY have always loved food–we love learning about people’s food traditions and practices, from recipes treasured over generations to new family favorites that shine a light on stories and experiences important to North Country life. And we love sharing food with you–at events, gathered round our own TAUNY Kitchen counter, and through stories, photos, and videos online.

Open Call for Knitting Projects

Jill here: In my ideal world, everyone would wear hand-knits every day of the year. We aren’t able to bring you an in-person North Country Knits display this year, but let’s have an online show & tell! Please email a photo of one project you completed in 2020 to jill@tauny.org by January 22. In the message, tell something about the project. We’ll post submissions in late January.

When you purchase an artwork and bring it home, there is an unspoken connection that is built between you and the artist. Periodically, artists mention to us how much they would like to see their work as it looks installed in the homes of purchasers. If you have Folkstore-purchased artwork in your home that looks especially nice in installation, we encourage you to share your photos with our Communications Director, Xiuke Wei at: xiuke@tauny.org. If you have a story to tell, you can send it along with the photo too! This is an opportunity to support your favorite artists in a different way, while strengthening the bonds between the TAUNY community and local artists.
